CITIZENSHIP

UAL L2 PerfArts.
Units 5, 6 & 7.

1. How did the research element help you with your acting development?
Minimum of 200 words

The research helped me understand the character, the characteristics, and how he behaves. I researched his behaviour by studying the script closely in my own time and reading it in class. The research also helped with the characteristics of acting the character of Tom, who I find closed, introverted, casual in appearance, uncertain and scared. Researching in class and on the internet for costume ideas, I was able to develop my acting.
I also researched the writer Mark Ravenhill, why he wrote the script, made a video of information about him, about LGBT characters and plays written in the 90's.

2. We identified acting skills from day one of the course. What skills do you feel you have developed over this project. Please be as specific as you can with examples from rehearsals and text study.
Minimum of 200 words

I have developed the skill of learning lines. I did this by reading the script, going over it with other people in your group and learning the ques from the script. This was done throughout the rehearsal time. I feel like I've become quicker and better at learning lines.
I have developed how to use my emotions, whilst staying in character. For example; "...I should have gone to a f***ing professional, instead of letting you f****ng the whole thing up". During this part of the scene, I was using emotions such as anger, hate and resentment, whilst also remembering my lines and showing how I felt.
In college I learnt warm up exercises for going on stage, such as vocal warm ups and stretches. This helped me in the scene as I could use my voice techniques and improvisation skills.

3. On the day how do you feel the performance went.

I feel that the performance went okay, as we remembered all our lines and direction, but I personally felt my acting didn't convey enough emotions and enough drama into the words. I feel that the scene did not have enough 'action' for my character and I would like to work on the difference between underpaying and 'overplaying' the text.
I think the audience found it interesting, but not appealing, due to the lack of emotion. I feel there is room for improvement if we worked on the scene with our emotions and also practiced more at home. There is always room for improvement and development.
